Loose handrails can lead to unwanted injuries to not only you but your family members. Making sure everything is properly tightened, and sturdy can reduce the chances of major injuries! It’s definitely important to inspect and fix loose handrails.
This is a Safety Task!
People don’t commonly check to see how safe their stairs and handrails are, but these are significant safety issues. Wobbly railings that move back and forth can cause other boards to split and crack, resulting in additional damage and safety issues.
This is a Preventative Maintenance Task!
Ensuring everything is safe, and working order can prevent injuries and curtail expenses for fixing surrounding damaged areas.
HomeManager classifies this as an Insurance Task!
Tasks can be done by: Homeowner, Handyman, or Carpenter
Task Steps
Step 1 – Inspect your stairs & handrails
- Stand at the top of the stairs and look down them to ensure that all the stair edges are aligned.
- Now is a good time to take your “before photo” for the task
- Next, look at the stair treads. Are they long enough for every person’s feet to fit the full length? If not, this could present a fall hazard
- Lastly, examine the handrails by giving them a tug or try moving them back and forth. Make sure the handrails are solid with no give after tugging on them.
Step 2 – Maintain problem areas
- If a handrail seems loose, you should determine how it is anchored and then tighten it. Sometimes, it makes sense to add glue for a tight fit. If you are uncomfortable with this task, hire a professional to look at these issues.
- You can keep your stairways safe to eliminate any clutter on the stairs and make sure they are properly lit. Handrails should be free of obstructions
